Just to speak up for "conservative" state power sources, I am going to make the point that we here in central NM are on Texas sourced electric and ng. I have been here for 20 years. Not one failure due to the source. Ever. I rely on electric to water cattle. It is critical. I can put up with discomforts for several days and get water from the store, but livestock need water. We do get local failures from time to time...generally high winds or lightning storms knocking out power lines.

There have been issues a couple of times along the RIo Grande Valley with gas line shut downs due to pump failures back at Texas wellhead points when severe (once in 30 years type) cold waves hit. I keep a wood stove in reserve and a generator for driving a well if I have to.
