Another positive way to look at the adjustment of inventory issue is that of the presumed 49 laser inventory(131 lasers shipped/82 steppers installed) maybe most of the "excess" is held by integrators(read Canon?) who have not delivered yet, and that others(read ASML) may not have any real excess and are ordering in increasing numbers...

Maybe there will be no actual decrease in laser orders for the quarter!?

Then(!), next quarter, Canon et als. will get up to speed and we can all have that big party at 35!!!!!...and I'll be in the black!...and Jess will be smiling again!!!

Yippee....!

I've had too much coffee this morning!

Love y'all!

Fred

They've held inventory for quite some time and....

I expect they will always hold a high amount. I think the inventory IS a little TOO HIGH right now given we are knee high in Asia doo-doo :-) I think perception will change and become more positive over the months. I also expect interest in new products to have a negative short-term effect.

I was surprised to see CYMER ship as many lasers as they did last Q. If the company didn't say they would, I wouldn't have believed it.

I think it has to do with this being a new and lucrative opportunity for all involved. CYMER's customers have just gotten a REAL CRASP on production and many have plans to ramp up BIG-TIME. I-line is a losing market right now and each Q report will indicate more and more DUV as a % of market share.

Cymer just gave the market an excuse to adjust inventory and they probably used R&D to justify a portion of it.

I think earnings will come in exactly as Cymer told us - no surprises.

Aloha

Nevin,

It seems to me that what is meant by a 1:1 sales of lasers to sales of steppers will depend on the number of stepper sales which will be increasing. The 82 in production does not mean that only 82 were installed in 4Q97. Since it takes a long time to get them working properly after installation, it would not seem unlikely that the number in production next quarter could be more than 212 (82 installed 4Q97 + 130 new installs).

To my way of thinking, there could easily be a significant increase in laser sales. Maybe Jay did not understand this point at first either.

Just another point of view.

Best of luck.
