Shahen: re, "Intel upbeat."
If Intel reaches 50% PII by July it will be 15 months since product introduction. I still think Intel expected the transition to be faster. I suspect that the transition to 386, 486 and even Pentium were much faster. The fact that they are reducing prices on PII much faster then they have done historically on other products is an indicator to me. (One of the reasons analysts are forecasting flat earnings for 1998 in spite of predicted unit growth). Covington seems like a knee jerk reaction to the market and to the competition. I don't think this was in their original plans. I also think that Compaq et al will maintain product with socket 7. (Unless AMD fails miserably). It will be interesting to see how Covington compares technologically to K6 and P55. The PC makers and the market have much more influence over what Intel produces then ever before. If Intel must maintain socket 7 product and Covington enters the market at $150, what's going to happen to the price of P55? Can't wait to see the first report on Covington from "Tom's Hardware". This will give an early indication where the product mix is headed.
