I thought about chickens .. a plot mate young Chinese (LOL early 40s young) had some (her hubby interestingly was my son's chem high school teacher.. always a small world) Anyway... Her girls get attached to them ..but after a year or so egg production is off so since she was not going to kill then to eat she sends them to a 'farm' that takes care of it... but everyone knows what's happening .. it was different for her as a kid.. In Cranberry Portage Manitoba where I lived for awhile as a very young kid one day we were eating my favourite rabbit that I played with :( It was that age before school but when memories start to stick

That kinda stuck with me....
