David, If anyplace is aware of Y2K it is Washington, DC due in great part to the efforts of Tony Keyes and the local radio program he has hosted for the past 2 years. What is disturbing is that the wheels of progress seem to be rusted in place around here. But I personally believe that the DC politicos are loathe to discuss the topic publically since it would quite obviously undermine confidence in the state of the economy. When I heard William Daley, Secretary of Commerce, mention Y2K the Friday before the State of Union address I actually had some hope that the issue would be brought out of the closet as a distraction from current shenanigans. Sadly, I was mistaken and instead Clinton opted to only discuss the "Rosy Scenario" perspective. When the heady enthusiasm ends sometime this spring the shock may actually be quite nasty indeed. I think Yardeni is right on the money if not overly optimistic. But then again, it looks as if we may take the opportunity to pummel Iraq (some suggest do it now while we have the confidence in our IT and logistics systems to do so). There is an excellent article in the Washington Times on the dangers inherent in bombing Iraq at this time and why our Arab friends would rather have us assassinate Saddam, rather than lengthy air strikes.washtimes.com Ed Meagher, Tony Keyes partner, mentioned that he had spoken with a source here in the DC area that has postulated that Y2K may be playing a role in the US taking a more aggressive stance against Saddam. Given the possibilities of extreme Asian turmoil over the Y2K issue, we may find ourselves heavily involved in countering Chinese overtures in the Pacific Rim, as well as possibly defending S. Korea from its opportunistic Northern Sister state. We live in interesting times. Regards, Ron
