Dave, a Ms. McKay, Bear Stearns analyst, just now on CNBC, addressed the effect of y2k on bottom lines. Pointed out that remedial cost must be expensed. Therefore cost has a direct effect on net. She sees market not reflecting this until second-half.

Someone neglected to tell Filene's Basement..

Filene's Basement Corp. (BSMT): The specialty-store chain
said it expects an operating loss for its fiscal fourth quarter
ending Jan. 31 because of a $7.6 million charge for ''Year 2000
Compliance''
and a $3.0 million charge. Filene's fell 1/8 to 4
11/32.

Bob -

Hopefully this is NOT news that Y2K is a current period expense.

Given our inane love affair for "performance" as shown in bogus financial numbers, it's been widely known that companies have been holding back on attacking Y2K because of what such unanticipated spending would do on the all holy bottom line... to say nothing of personal bonuses. <meow>
