RE: "Not "more than ever before". Historically Intel has seen much worse before. I wouldn't write off Intel's influence either. They ARE the monopoly. Obviously there's some price pressures at this time but I don't see it as menacing as you do. I think the worst is behind us"

I agree it does seem that the worst is behind Intel for the time being. I do see some problems if Intel manages to pull off the Slot one coup. The biggest from a monopolistic standpoint is IF Intel effectively snuffs out Socket seven this leaves virtually NO competition since Intel has licenced rights to it. At that point Intel would have the most monopoloistic position posible...I'd expect the DOJ and Gore step in. But alas, even if Intel has to give up Slot one it's too late because they are already moving to other interfaces. If the DOJ doesn't head Intel off at the pass then Intel and it's stock are dirt cheap right now...

Shahen: re: "It was originally assumed that it would take Intel until Q498 to address the sub-1000 market." Actually, Intel responded much faster by cutting prices on P54 and P55, (also see Compaq's new DeskPro products). The problem is these are socket 7 devices and Intel would like to see these go away. That's why I describe it as knee jerk reaction. If AMD and Cyrix/NSM weren't players do you really think there would be Covington? Any way, it makes for interesting discussion. Gene
