Miss Penni, thinking that Don't Ask Rambi was the antithesis of the SERIOUS Feelings thread, I came over here to roll myself in gummibears after dunking myself in the essence of light humor with that tiny subspecies which spells 'that' tahtaway!!! And what should I find but psychology/philosophy worthy of the most studied posts at Ask John Galt!!

Anyway, in reply to you, X the Unknown, I have little to say since Miss Penni is doing a wonderful job at musing. I only want to comment that I am one of earth's most sensitive people in regard to the pain of the world, and not brave at pain generally. Few would dispute that!! I often perceive myself to be under tremendous stress, as well. And yet although I would love protection, I have none, because I have no faith. And it is not something that I lost, but something which never made sense for me to have, once I completed the typical college age exploration of the varieties of belief systems.

Not wanting in any way to refute your idea, X, but doing so anyway based on my experience. In some cases, at least, ending up a free thinker is perhaps simply the result of a childhood spent around adults who challenge the status quo and love to debate ideas.

I wonder also about the strength of early conditioning. The Catholics say "Give us a child until he is seven, and we'll have him for eternity." (or something like that). When a belief is drilled into someone from childhood on, the way so many religions are, even though there tends to be a period of questioning and rebellion with adolescence, often there is an inability to completely and irrevocably deny the existence of whatever was instilled by that early conditioning. Later there is a return to the original belief structure maybe modified or altered but still resembling in some way the original, as if something has to fill that space. I'm making this up as I go. Can you tell?
