I ended up completely avoiding the dot-com crash. I left for an extended trip to Asia and when I came back my portfolio had nearly doubled. I decided that was too much too fast and I sold everything. Four and half months later we had the crash. I didn't get back into the market until 8 months after 9/11...I was too early.

But that was more luck than foresight. There have been many cases that the market just keeps going up and up and being cautious actually costs your more than if you had stayed put until the crash had actually started.
