The podcast was complaining about the idea of using the production of hydrogen as a store of energy to smooth the inevitable interruptions in renewable energy. In the second minute, a speaker said there were current uses for hydrogen that were essential and we need to find a better way to produce it. He said 40 mega tonnes of hydrogen is used in the production of fertilizers. If we want 8 billion people to eat, we need that hydrogen.

Likewise, if we want steel while limiting the rise in CO2, then we need hydrogen to produce it. Steel is responsible for 8% of human-induced emissions of CO2. If we use hydrogen instead of carbon to reduce iron-ore, we can substitute H20 for the CO2.
