To which, this riposte is apposite: Europe's political sensibility, sometimes
called "realism" and accurately called the de-moralization of politics
(politics in which the only important questions are, Do the trains run on
time? Do the autobahns get built?), has been no impediment to the
emergence of Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Franco and Hitler. So spare us your
tutorials on political sophistication.

Preposterous. In terms of logic, this makes no sense at all. Apples and oranges. The European point of view, correctly stated, is simply that a politician's sex life has nothing to do with ability to do his job. Somehow to equate this with the rise of Fascism and monolithic Communism is an extremely cheap shot. Sometimes, at least, Will is more intelligent than this.

And doesn't he feel it's just the tiniest bit elitist to sneer at "vulgarians"? Next thing we know he'll be talking about "trailer trash".

Duncan, IMO this is a poor example of Will's work - his next to last paragraph (the idea that some "moral compass" has kept Hitlers away from our govt) is a pathetically laughable and historically indefensible piece of trash.

George should be ashamed, but he doesn't deal with indignation well.
