Respond to of 5945 <<Why do you think surgeons have been wearing masks in operating rooms for decades?>> That an easy one. It's same reason why surgeons wear gloves, and why they spend so much time making sure their hands (etc). It's to stop bacterial infection of the patient ongoing surgery. Unmasking the surgeons: the evidence base behind the use of facemasks in surgery (nih.gov) Do you wish to live in an operating theatre? I don't. Besides, I think were are taking about viruses here, not bacteria. So to spin the question here. Why do you think humans have not been wearing masks for millions of years, and why have not face masks evolved in creatures as you infer they are so important? Especially for filtering out viruses... not bacteria. How many viruses are there in any cubic meter of air? Here is a clue. "During the 2009–2010 flu season, 50 per cent of the samples collected (8/16) contained IAVs with concentrations ranging from 5800 to 37 000 genome copies m-3. On average, 64 per cent of virus-laden particles were found to be associated with particles smaller than 2.5 µm, which can remain airborne for hours. Modelling of virus concentrations indoors suggests a source strength of 1.6 ± 1.2 × 105 genome copies m3 h-1 and a deposition flux onto surfaces of 13 ± 7 genome copies m-2 h-1. Doses of 30 ± 18, 236 ± 140 and 708 ± 419 TCID50 were estimated for 1, 8 and 24 h exposures, respectively. As a whole, these results provide quantitative support for the possibility of airborne transmission of influenza." Concentrations and size distributions of airborne influenza A viruses measured indoors at a health centre, a day-care centre and on aeroplanes (nih.gov) Finally, the question is. Do operating theatres take precautions to prevent viruses entering operating theaters ? You might wish to live in an operating theatre where surgeons are trained to fit face masks correctly, and change them every two hous, I don't. I have working in clean rooms, It takes a lot of money to make a class 10 environment, that is for one micron particles and above. I have not intention of permanently living in one either, even if it made a difference to my health. In fact I believe this fashion of being scared of viruses is overall bad for your health. You already have viruses and bacteria in your body, quite a number of them if you check the science, and I predict we will be the laughing stock of future generations, if there is any. That should give you an idea of how ridiculous I think your suggestion is.
