I agree. Many companies will be first wounded by the TIME it takes to ADSL into the markets. Then the RBOC business will go to several LARGE players (who will likely pick up some leaders like PAIR), and the consumer market will be commoditized with razor thin, "small company busting" margins.

Takeouts? AWRE has IP and engineering talent, and also are into the important cablemodem business (with their DWMT algoritms). PAIR has great talent and IP, and is currently MAKING money with their HDSL T1/E1 equipment. Persoanlly, I'd be concerned being a WSTL owner. Their "time" contracts (no hard $$$ numbers) may be an empty promise.
But without being bought out, small companies will have a heck of time surviving in this market, if they even last long enough until it gets here.

My 2 cents, anyway.

looks like the stock has
finally passed into stronger
hands for the first time since
the initial "rumor" pop pre-dsl
announcement. it looks like
it is trading with authority after
finding some new support
around 12.

i agree the pie will be divided
among just so many...
