Mohan and Intel Investors - New IBM PCs - Sporting Intel Chips I think Intel's business with IBM hasn't completely evaporated since IBM started using the mighty AMD K6. Paul {============================================}zdnet.com IBM readies new desktop, more price cuts By John Dodge, PC Week Online 02.03.98 10:24 am ET The latest round of PC price cuts will continue Wednesday when IBM introduces entry-level Pentium II desktop computers starting at $1,249 along with price drops on existing 166MHz and 200MHz Pentium systems to as low as $889. The new PC 300GL line will come with a choice of Pentium II processors up to 333MHz. Also included are 16MB, 32MB or 64MB of SDRAM and hard drives with capacities of 2.5GB or 4.5GB. The 300GL will use Intel Corp.'s NLX motherboard, according to sources close to IBM Personal Computer Co., based in Somers, N.Y. Monitors are not included in the base price. "We are aggressively pricing these systems thanks in part to our Advanced Fulfillment build-to-order system," said IBM spokesman Bill Hughes. IBM officials have previously stated plans to sell Pentium II-based systems for less than $1,500. The new systems are aimed at business, as evidenced by the management software bundled with each desktop: WakeOn LAN, LAN Client Control Manager for remote software updating and asset protection that includes laser-etched serial numbers on all major components. The 300GL, and existing 300PL systems, will also include new hard disk protection software called Smart Reaction, sources said. When the disk encounters problems, Smart Reaction backs up data even when the system or network is unattended. The systems will come in minitower or desktop configurations, while a choice of Windows 95 or Windows NT will be available. IBM's moves follow those of PC leader Compaq Computer Corp., which Monday cut prices on its Deskpro business desktops by up to 18 percent.
