The Intellifelons havd AMDenvy, AMD keeps growing no matter what they do. I also think that CPQ will take a hand soon and fund AMD.

greg, re:<Even though Intel took this action AMD is reported to have picked up some market share>

There is a growing group of diehard anti-Intel, pro-AMD and pro-Cyrix loyalists who would pay extra for a non-Intel CPU. I saw this when K6-233's became difficult to get and soared above MMX-233 prices. These people (and I'm proud to be one of them!) will do crazy things like rewrite Netscape Communicator for the AM-3D instruction set as soon as they can get their hands on the chip and the manuals.

Intel efforts to strangle AMD won't work
Amen.

Greg,

I tend to differ on the cash infusions from Compaq. IMHO I would look for IBM to be the company offering the assistance if not an out right buy out. IBM has the deep pockets, manufacturing expertise, excess fab space(once they lose manufacturing rights to National Semi's designs) and the willingness to accept the vertical integration thats been in their past. IBM has also the one most willing to stick its neck out against Intel by going with alternative processors. It was IBM's leverage that got Intel to license 80286 cpu's to AMD. Heck it even has been manufacturing Cyrix's chip since before 486 days, remember IBM's Blue lighting? Once IBM looses its manufacturing rights to Cyrix's chips it looses a lot of leverage. So look for big blue to go after AMD. Besides IBM has the necessary cross licensing agreements with Intel to allow AMD to port the K7 to slot 1 and Cyrix won't need IBM any longer.

Greg, your posts must be a sea of red ink giving that you are unparalleled in terms of incorrect spelling. Hopefully the new SI spelling checker will assist those who spell like third grade children and make no effort to do anything about it -- as you clearly never did. Heretofore, I considered concern over spelling to be petty and I want to thank you for revealing just how distracting incorrect spelling can be.
