that get's my "well duh" award. Seriously though, your point is well taken regarding risk. But, OTOH, without risk, there is no reward. So we take calculated risks based on analysis of all the known relevant factors. Unfortunately in this situation, there were some unknown risk factors that once they hit the light of day, impacted the stock price severely. Compounded by an aggressive short position that was privy to the "unknown" risk factors, thus enabling themselves to profit handily.

Of course, RACE management blundered seriously in the marketing strategy of BT in the early stages and I would certainly say that the stock price has continued to reflect that fact. If by "conservative" you mean you're mostly in well known, well capitalized companies with good track records, I would agree with that strategy, small caps will be the first to get hammered in a market downturn, many will have a tough time recovering (look at the charts of many of the small caps since the Oct break, lot's of carnage still out there).
