Night Writer, Glad to have you back! Cost is still an issue in this and the article lists estimations that LMDS will be less expensive than the other broadband services. Add to that that LMDS will also have more bandwidth (growth capacity for all the things we don't even know we're going to want/need) and LMDS remains on top..IMHO.

That said, I will digress to something said on a much earlier posting and that is that this is a Beta/VHS or Apple/IBM argument and just because you have the best technology does not mean you are going to win the market. Whoever (whomever... never get that one right) gets their product accepted as the standard, will capture the market, build product loyalty and prevail until the next significant improvement in capability or price or both unseats the champ. Like world heavy weight fights, the title holder must be soundly defeated for the challenger to walk away with the belt... all ties or close ones go to the champ. Therefore, it is vital for the LMDS players (and for whatever Internet II is to become) to get on the street FAST and tout their capabilities LOUDLY and with conviction so we don't get stuck for a long time to come with half an answer.

Hopefully, we will see the real power behind the bidding shortly. James has been pulling out some of the details while you were gone and I suggest you read his recent posts as a quick horse-up.

We all will need the bandwidth and capability (playing field) that LMDS promises if we are to move forward with personal and corporate communications tech. Trying to squeeze out the last bit of usefulness from existing phone wires makes no sense. It will be an incremental improvement to be sure. Just because phonelines are there doesn't answer the mail. If they weren't, would we put up that infrastructure? NO!! Time for a leap in technology so that the playing field will be ready for the tech that follows. Given the market and economy, NOW is the time to lean forward in the foxhole and build the backbone infrastructure for the future.. the tech to fill it up will be drawn to its excess capacity. Geez... sorry... didn't mean to get up on a soap box.... but that is what I believe.

I'm long on LMDS tech... I just hope I've put my money on the right company. I think I have but time will tell. CAP

Re: This is not a positive spin on the future of LMDS

NW,

Good find, though I beat getting Allied's view of LMDS by a few days. While doing research I ran across Allied's Web Site and wrote to them about 3 weeks ago. Been passing email back and forth with one of their reps. Got this in the mail on the 29th, Leaving the Reps name out.

Jim,

I think WSTL is acting pretty well but Im not too keen on CVUS. Ive
been going over the results from our research this week and we dont see LMDS as the broadband favorite son. ADSL seems to be the big winner in our opinion.

Those free pages should be up soon, if they are not already.

Regards,

I wrote back and explained why I thought CVUS is a near term win.

We passed some good mail back and forth, but not that much on LMDS.

I had hoped to get a free Sample, but doesn't look that way. I originally wrote to them because they boosted some free reports were due out on their site in Mid Dec97, and still had not been posted by Jan 3rd. If you check out the site they are now available, but contain very little.

Thanks for posting the info NW! As the rep stated in a prior mail, once I make a million or two, I can afford to buy their reports :^)
