Great post Haim.. re Trajan .. I always recall that was the ultimate height of Roman empire wrt land... Schwab.. I just learned something :) wrt TJ and uber China.. I am disappointed by Xi and mandate extension 'essentially for life' ...I actually have a different insight that TJ.. looking white ,, my more diluted daughter despite freckles has obvious Asian features I lack .. ie.. no one ever questions her being a Wong .. :) .. Soooo... I pass for white face to face.. so much so that I was forever correcting people.. NO WONG NOT LONG .. (Long being dragon in Mandarin BTW :) When folks only saw my name I was often passed over and confusion set in when they actually saw me.. (I am persistent) ... Using a credit card (not a problem now) I was always EXTRA verified .. as some white guy in possession of stolen credit card :) In early elementary school each day was a battle.. I went to Chinese Catholic Mission school in Montreal for Kindergarten through grade 3.. To both whites and Chinese I was a mongrel.. This was in Montreal Chinatown/Slum . where family lived and prior generation began business.. `which freed us all.. ' we bused to school then... full Chinese kids that got on bus before us would reserve first 6 rows.. for friends... My younger and very feisty sister got into Rosa Parks mode one day .. and we sat in Row two.. My fear of retribution from dad for not defending little sister was far far greater than any fear of fighting other kids :) so we took row 2 :) There was a price.. and all was not harmony ... white/Chinese whatever.. racism is a human condition... ultra-nationalistic and divisive with his China China which is utterly racist, There is a difference between racist and totalitarian.. although I agree.. racism is often a tool of such... May point being that people can live in harmony.. The advertisement of Canada and the US.. although harmony is better in one and relative in both ... because of the entrenched systems When my dad passed some 6 years ago ...all kinds of folks came to his wake.. many many hundreds.. some politicians etc due to charity work yada yada.. but the ones that interested me were his university buddies for one... mostly Jewish and a few blacks.. He was in university in the late 50s early 60s... I actually knew a lot of them quite well as they stayed friends though life... for two.. was the elderly black gentleman that was a few years older.. family name Leacock..He regaled me with tales of my grandpa who had started biz.. supported family in Montreal and first family back in China (deal they made as Canada would not allow Chinese men workers to bring over families) .. Mr. Leacock's mom was midwife to my dad and most of his siblings... Leacock said.. often my GP would flag him down and give him a penny or two.. was real money then LOL .. and say bring that home to your mother .. I am watching you ...take it straight home.. yes we can get along and even help each other... It is hard to see China or Chinese as victims today is it not ? Just look how easily Mr. Trump focused evil and hate on eh Chinese I understand TJ... the history is long and recent... The West loves to say that was then ... when it would still be if they could :)
