Think About This: How Much $$$ Does Bill Gates Have? The richest man in the world is an American. He is Bill Gates, co-founder and current Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Corporation (the company that makes the software your computer is running right now). It is estimated that Gates is worth more than Forty Billion Dollars. It is also estimated that Gates earns more than $1.6 Billion a year! But just how much money is that. Written as a currency it looks like this: Gates Net Worth = $40,000,000,000.00. Gates Yearly Income = $ 1,600,000,000.00. Not bad, but how much is that really? Most of us are paid in equal amounts each pay period. It may be once a month or once every week. Let's use the same idea to pay Mr. Gates. If Gates money were paid once a month then he would get a paycheck for a measly $133 million a month. If Bill Gates were paid weekly he would get a paycheck worth $33,325,000.00. That's Thirty Three Million Three Hundred Twenty-five thousand dollars a week. If Bill Gates worked 7 days a week he would make just over Four Million Four Hundred Thousand dollars a day ($4,400,000.00). Hmmm, looks like the money is getting serious now. But just how much is that really? Let's imagine that poor Bill Gates were handed his money each day. And let's say that you are the person who will hand it to him, and to make it easy let's say you can use $50 bills. To pay Bill his $4.4 Million dollars for that day you would have to start at midnight and hand him one $50 bill each second for over 88,000 seconds. Oh, by the way, there are only 86,400 seconds in a day, so you'd work around the clock and still need an extra 26 minutes to give Bill all of his money for just that day. And since you'd be working we'll pay you a great hourly rate of $50 per hour. So, for that same 24 hour period you'd make just over $10,000.00. Bill's Money for 24 hours: $4,400,000.00 Your pay for 24 hours: $ 10,000.00 Still not impressed. Let's put this in terms we can all understand. We know Bill Gates has to live somewhere. He recently built a new 20,000 square foot home in Washington (state) near his business. The home cost a little more than Forty Million dollars to build. It took Bill Gates just over 9 days to save up enough money to pay cash for his house! In other words, if you earned $25,000 a year that would be like you buying a house for $250! Now, think of this. It has probably taken you 2 minutes to read to this point. In that same 2 minutes Bill Gates has earned more than $6100. If you think about this for another 5 minutes Bill will earn over $31,000.00! Bill Gates commutes just over an hour from his 20,000 square foot home to the Microsoft complex in Redmond, Washington. In that hour of commute he will earn $183,300.00. While he drinks his first cup of coffee at the office he will earn $62,000! Bill Gates drives a 1997 Ford Expedition. The car has a sticker price of $30,000.00. It took Bill gates 5 minutes to save enough money to buy the car. Finally, to put this in perspective: the average American would have to save 100% of his/her income for 180 years to save what Bill Gates makes in 1 day! Oh yeah, Bill Gates is a college dropout.
