Richnorth, OFF TOPIC Glad to see you back and that you survived your ordeal in good shape. Richnorth: <<I have clearly indicated in my posts that Ted Roosevelt 'knew' of the impending Japanese attack but did nothing to turn it into a fiasco because he wanted an excuse to rally the full support of the American people in the war against Japan. Also, I have pointed out that the Americans had broken the 'secret' code of the Japanese forces and were so highly successful in anticipating and thwarting and defeating enemy action that Japanese surrender was inevitable.>> BG Comment: I would most certainly agree that the sainted Ted Roosevelt knew of the impending attack on Pearl -- from his lofty posts on Mount Rushmore and the Ether Capacious (i.e., heaven). I will also agree that most historians conclude that FDR (that's Franklin (dig <GGG>, not Ted or Eleanor) knew of Japan's plans and intentionally ignored them to create a rationale for US entry into the war. I believe the evidence is persuasive that, while the ultimate defeat of Japan is a given, surrender was not going to be quick or cheap, Truman's decision was justified. I continue to believe his big mistake from atactical standpoint was to stop Mac Arthur at the Yalu, but once the decision was made and Mac Arthur turned against him, Truman, as Commander-In-Chief had no option but to remove him. I always enjoy your posts and glad to have you back. I still think the key for gold here is Japan. If they are acting defensively to bolster the yen, permanently cut taxes, sell yen based Government owned assets, there will be downward pressure on the $US and upward pressure on interest rates. Regards, Bill
