when we were stuck in Cape Town last year my jack asked me what we were living on, and I said we were on-line banking from HK to S Africa new friend (ballet teacher, and an mom of fellowette ballet student along side my coconut daughter), to pay for stuff and to get local cash, and we were using Visa card to pay for grocery shopping and hospital visit.

The credit cards we were carrying were all far away from expiration (direct courier service was shut down between Cape Town and HK). Was critically important that the internet stayed up (there were scheduled electricity outages that also shut down cellular towers due to poor battery maintenance.

Was able to buy gold coins using Visa, and the Safari place accepted all cards flavours.

The government (Reserve Bank of SA) operated SCoin shops also accepted bitcoin.

Modern refugee-dom easier than the good old days. Given the state of the local locked-down (March 26 - July 1st) and post-lockdown economy, and we were prompt and good payers, everything was easy enough.

I was somewhat concerned when it came time to evacuate to Vancouver through Amsterdam, as multiple custom checks would of course expose the gold which I would naturally declare at each check point. Believe I had around 20 some coins of different design.

No check points cared even as the Canadians customs showed some curiosity.

I suspect had I carried diamonds would have experienced more of a problem.

A friend had once carried 150 pounds of gold, repatriating from HK to California, and henceforth every time he crossed US border he met hassles.
