Biden doesn't speak like a street fighter. But very early on he bluntly said that China won't be the global leader they aspire to be on his watch. So the message has been the same and more importantly has been followed with real actions.

China has shown a lot of restraint. To a good extent because they don't want to spook the world play into the US trap. And also b/c they understand that the natural course of events favors them and all they have to do is to stick to their knitting and be patient.

During Trump era both countries were unpleasantly surprised by how dependent on each other they are. What they both need to appreciate is that interdependence is good. It brings peace and prosperity for all sides. So rather than shirk away from it, both sides should enhance it.

Additionally, as I wrote on a political thread a couple of years ago, China's ascent is inevitable. What is not set in stone is what kind of country they will be when they get there. Rather than trying stop China's ascent, the US should help them in exchange for having them signing up to values and global institutions that are compatible with the American values.
