Plain and simple, but for Kennedy we would not have gone to the moon. The 1962 speech that he gave at Rice university and the fear that the Soviets would beat us to the moon inspired our nation. Some choice quotes from the speech. There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all.
