I think he's a great weather vane. He admitted in a video that he did things in his hedge fund that would be seen as illegal today, if not back then... mostly stock price manipulation. As for managing a portfolio of stocks that beat the market for the level of risk, he's failed. I used to tweet him "Why Bother?" with a link to my calculation of his returns vs the S&P 500 (and of course my work) when he'd promote his "Action Alerts Plus" portfolio. He eventually changed it to a "club" where you pay to be in the club, not advice on how to beat the market or even match it...
