No nation is "better" than any other. The "goodness" is simply a function of affluence. The more plentiful your means, the more humanitarian that nation is likely to be. The Mongolians were a great example of this. They changed from the most savage and brutal force the world has seen into patrons of art and humanity within a few generations of affluence. To this day, the word mogul is synonymous to patron. If you were to adjust for that, I suspect that the US would not even make it to the top 50.

The soul searching you are talking about is simply the result of wanting to eat your cake and having it too. I am willing to make you a bet that a year from now this will be no more than a footnote in the news and 5 years from now it won't be even that. So much for the soul searching. Meanwhile, every child and neighbour of every Afghan interpreter that got lynched will remember the Americans vividly for the rest of their life and will pass those lessons to their children.

Finally, land occupation is not the only way to build an empire. The Vikings built theirs without it. They attacked ports and trade routes of anyone who did not have a favorable trade relationship with them. They'd burn you to the ground until you learned to toe the line. But they rarely got tangled in an occupation. The American empire tends to follow the same approach most of the time. The rest of the time it follows the Persian empire model a.k.a "supporting our allies" which is code for keeping regimes that toe the line in power regardless of what their people want.

I cannot remember a single year in my life that the US was not bombing someone somewhere.

One must not lie to himself. Seeing the reality for what it is is the first step towards lasting happiness.
