The US never "invaded" Afghanistan. It is not that simple.

Many Afghani's wanted colossally more US ground troops; while the US/coalition mission morphed to support and sustain the modern government and it's troops vs. the Taliban in a civil war (originally to confront and destroy al Qaeda there.) I personally don't buy the "evil US imperialist" conspiracy theories about this.

I just got a surprising email from an 81 year old activist friend in Berkeley -- a totally different view reminding me that 50 years ago the US far-left supported the global objectives of Russia and the Soviet Union over the US government in those days (I'm stepping in shit, I know):

The quote from that email:

"Imagine if the U.S. had not backed the mujahideen and if the Afghans had been allowed to entertain the possibility of a socialist future. This would have been a struggle with its own zigs and zags, but it would certainly have resulted in something better than what we have now: the return of the Taliban, the flogging of women in public and the enforcement of the worst social codes. Imagine that."

FWIW. The emerging fascist era, the destruction of shared environment, and the shrinking of global human rights are key in the modern post WWII era and we must keep the lights on.
