A gullible public is an easy to control public. As the work is more and more automated, the need for the number of people with important knowledge and critical thinking is reduced. Nothing is better for the ruling elite than a public that lacks the mental capacity to unseat them even if all the barriers were removed. BTW, the fears of all the manufacturing and technology leaving the US and America becoming a service only economy are unfounded. Such a future can never exist. Service economy can only exist once manufacturing jobs are saturated (which can happen via automation and productivity gains but they still need to be there).
