This is the first time I've heard about Afghanistan all day. If you and Fox quit talking about it, by the end of Oct., nobody will even remember where it is.

"The occupation of Afghanistan was totally different than the Viet Nam war. People should not be conflating the two things. One was a matter of invading a country because the right wing nutcases wanted to because they were paranoid about the domino effect"

The other was a matter of invading a country because the American nutcases, 90% of us, were pissed about 911. The mission was to get OBL and destroy AQ's infrastructure. It was not nation-building. We should have left 10 years ago.

"We should never have even been in Viet Nam, as the French had invaded their country"
We invaded Afghanistan. So did Alexander the Great, the Brits, and the Russians. Maybe none of us should have been there.

koan, just look at their political history in the Wikipedia article and then show us which regime was not affiliated with the Cold War politics during the 1973 to 1989 window.

Modern Afghanistan was a huge welfare state created and funded by the West. It could likely only be stabilized with endless years of military and financial support of additional trillions of dollars, much of which would have been siphoned off to offshore bank accounts by the local politicians.

The whole adventure was a fools errand. There are numerous places where people are mistreated by their governments. We cannot save everyone.

Additional billions need to be spent on lifetime healthcare for the folks that served in our military and suffered permanent disabling injuries. That should be our priority now. let the countries bordering Afghanistan deal with it. They likely understand Afghanistan better than our political and military leaders. IMHO.
