I don't believe in fate. I believe in karma, though not in a mythological sense.

There is an arc of history. We're all swimming in it. It overwhelmingly dictates where we will end up, kind of like how a prolonged bull market decides the direction of your portfolio. Some nations understand this current of history and swim with it. Some try to go against it (like how some try to short a bull market). Most are on a raft just floating along with the current of history.

The die is not cast for the US or anyone else. But a winning strategy is one that does not try to outsmart the people here and now but rather looks longer than 10 years ahead (think Warren Buffett, not day traders).

The structure of the US political system + the momentum of the political currents makes it very hard for any president to astray from the trajectory. China has an advantage here.
