OMG. Of course we hit the mute button. We don't hang out with people who are idiots (or at least I don't). When you meet someone who talks crazy (who doesn't "believe" in vaccines, or climate change- for example) you avoid that person. You might walk the other way when you see them. You wouldn't invite them over or socialize with them. That IS the mute button in 3D. You wouldn't "discuss" things with them, because in 3D the crazy people can actually assault you, but you definitely would hit the mute button ASAP- and that button is the "walk away" button irl.

>>Because there is no mute button { IRL }.

Yes there is. It is called banishing, disengaging or avoidance. Failure to do this crosses into Civil Harassment. Are you forced to listen to a person IRL you don't want to hear from? No.

Moderation is good - if we go to the library we expect to find the books we look for in the sections where they are stored. If I want to read Subject X - there is a section for that. But if Y is about falsifying X, it is in another section. If the library were just a random collection of books with no sorting - there would be no ability to do academic scholarship.

That is all moderation is - if you want to see what random people argue about and how they argue - go to an unmoderated forum or create your own. If you know the issues - it is improbable further understanding is acquired by engaging with people who drank the Kook-Aid of the other side. It is your right to do that - but only in an unmoderated forum. There's still TOUs and the sensibilities of the commercial organization that runs the site. You can't follow people around from thread to thread once they avoid you and have disengaged. That is cyberstalking.

You're wrong, there IS a mute button. It's called ignoring. Here's an example:
