I don't know. We can think of many off-patent drugs that have been re-purposed that haven't been re-patented. Why is that, if it's so easy and there's so much money to be made? Why haven't we seen amoxicillin re-patented, for example? It's certainly been used in enough new applications over the years. We could come up with countless examples. I don't think it's nearly so simple as you make it sound. That's not to say it can't be done, but in a case like this with all the prior literature and studies that have been done, I think it's highly unlikely that a patent would be awarded that couldn't be easily contested or worked around based on prior art, if it were even awarded in the first place. I understand you have your beliefs (that there's bias displayed by proponents and no real proof), and you're entitled to them. I think you should also consider that perhaps you yourself have your own bias, but are just unable to consider it.
