I knew quite a few kids in Catholic School - it sounded messed up from what I heard. Knuckles smacked with rulers, being pulled by the ears. Personally, I went to Catechism with a neighbor kid a few times - for me, it was just like day camp. Something to do - pretty light on the religion surprisingly. I never understood the big deal - I had fun.

I had no personal axe to grind until much, much later. The kids would talk in the neighborhood. These were not isolated incidents - but rather consistent and mutually-reinforcing stories of physical punishments meted out by specific people at specific schools.

There was mishandling of another case which I won't go into the details - but suffice it to say that the whole sin and punishment message was not helpful to this particular individual who had been trafficked at 14 by criminals.

For the LA public school district field trips - the Church settled for whitewashing the history of the missions and creating a positively noble (and chaste) narrative of religious piety .
