Your specifics of a defined curriculum of "education that makes us smarter" has yet to be stated - so its complexity can't be evaluated as you propose it.

Exponentially increasing test taking could be it. Despite being some of the best test takers and most educated, Korea has yet to win a Nobel prize. This has been investigated by Korea - where did they go wrong?

Perhaps our societal emphasis on test taking and the benefits bestowed to people for being better at test taking is too complex, and "Aliens" is the simplest explanation? - all it requires is "Aliens".
