"Any comments on how the two compare in terms of price/performance/functionality?"

Stockman,

In one word - poorly.

In two words - they don't!

A Catalyst with a router turned on its' side and stuck in the chassis, is still a traditional router making software based forwarding decisions - not ASIC based wire-speed decisions.

Ask them when GIG interfaces will be available for their Catalyst or when they can route 7+ Mpps through that router turned sideways and stuck in the Catalyst.

Wait - they can't pump 7+ Mpps per second into the Catalyst to test their layer 3 story with, sorry ;(

Tom

What happen to the Granite purchase?

Will a Catalyst route IP. Will a Catalyst route between VLAN's inside the box? Does Catalyst support 802.1q tagging?

Accelar routes IP @ 7M pps. Accellar does policy (protocol) baced VLAN's and will route between them (7Mpps)in the box. Accelar has one GUI interface to manage a large community of switches and VLAN capabilities.

So you hand off your speedy (not 7Mpps) Catalyst traffic to a traditional software router. Sounds like shoving a watermellon down a firehose to me.
