>>one you forgot though was when Gerald Ford said that Poland

I don't regard that one as a gaff in the same sense - Jerky Ford believed that nonsense. Remember, it took him days to recant, and it was obvious that when it was done, it was done not because he believed he was wrong, but rather because of the political hit he was taking.

You know, Reagan actually got more votes than Jerky in the 1976 primaries (New Hampshire too), Jerky only got the nomination because the party establishment gave him all those non-primary delegates. Too bad, we would have been spared Jimmy "Hornblower" and the near-ruination of economy and all the foreign policy mistakes (Iran, Central America & Soviet appeasement) - amazingly enough, he barely beat Ford.(Polls showed Reagan beating Carter on election day - which Reagan would have easily done given his unparalleled record of electoral success).

The Cold War may also have been over four years earlier.

Must not cast stones about spelling when you misspell Quayle's name. I remember how the press went nuts over Quayle's misspelling of potato but there's nary a word when one of theirs makes similar gaffs. I'm no fan of Quayle's - I would never vote for him -but Gore is just as guilty of similar malapropisms. I'll never forget him saying on Larry King Live about the 'millionaire' tax applying to those making $200K/yr. Gore then said, "... well, if you make $200K for five years then you're a millionaire..." - what a doofus! How about Hillary stating they shouldn't have to hand over subpoenaed documents because "we are the president". Or when Ted Kennedy attempted to introduce Clinton at a campaign rally and literally babbled the last words of a rally cry. It was hilarious but never once mentioned or replayed on the 'news'.
