I invested in Overstock and Tzero directly because of Byrne. I didn't really want to own a discount internet seller of "overstocked" inventory but wanted their digital assets.

Back in the turn of the millennium, I wanted on the T + ! initiative. Many of us asked, "Why not T0?. Byrne is now gone and Overstock is trying to monetize the digital assets.

The early days of SI were quite interesting and much of it coincided with the tech bubble. I am of the opinion though that illegal short selling is more bark than bite. There are considerable controls in place to prevent major brokerage firms from "illegal short selling". If it occurs, it happens offshore of in dark pools (my opinion). I have spoken at length on some of the controls to prevent illegal short selling. It is hard to even short many stocks legally just because of limitations on lending.

Besides working in the middle of it, I have read a lot of it as well. My opinion is the major catalysts was the government pushing sub prime mortgages. People were given loans that violated all past lending rules. The housing boom, and inflated the true relative value of housing beyond traditional norms. The bubble reversed and started to take a lot more with it. Hidden in Plain sight by Peter Wallison was the best that I read. He really talked about the government's role in causing the collapse. The Big Short was decent as was Sorkin's book but Sorkin doesn't ever speak of the government role.

Some of the poster's here have received temporary (and permanent bans). One of my posts was flagged by Google and removed because according to the powers that be, I hit the trifecta of unwokeness. Hpwever, I think SI does try to stay as "hands off as possible but there is considerable outside influence.
