So can anyone verify that the recent action was actually based on a takeover rumor? Or is this just a guess?

I can't speak for the company, but all the comments from company execs I've heard over the years is that they are in the business of growing their company, and not shopping it around. This goes back to the 1950's, long before they went public. They just don't seem to be fast-buck chasers.
