Excellent post.

I actually lived in Lagos Nigeria for 8 months when I was in my early teens. My Dad was on a contract and took us kids down there to "broaden our minds". Your last line in that post sums up beautifully the greatest lesson that myself and my siblings learned from that experience.

<<People are people. We are all humans. We are nothing more or less. We have the same aspirations for our kids as everyone else. We hope they have the opportunity to get there. We do the best we can. I'd rather work with people than against them in the fight to improve lives and families.>>

Plus I remember the extreme kindness that we received from all the locals despite the abject poverty that was prevalent everywhere. I always remember the huge smiles and huge laughs......beautiful people.

True, that's a whole new subject of debate that goes back to the eternal nature vs nurture.
Opportunity, economics etc all play a role however there are also genetics involved.
There is a lot of evidence for differences in impulse control. Reaction to good/bad news i.e. funeral behavior, reunions etc with the screaming and flopping around on the ground. Acts of bravery where blacks will run into a burning building to rescue someone at a higher percentage than whites. Or in your sports, black quarterbacks will find an excuse to scramble/run the ball themselves, especially if the line of scrimmage is within 15 yards of the goal line.
Yes I have lots of friends but they clutch their wallets too in the old neighborhoods. I grew up in St Louis so I was around it a lot. I saw both sides. There is good and bad on both sides but the bad was a lot worse in some areas. I'd rather be broke down in South St Louis where the family was prominent than East St Louis.
FWIW, The Ferguson shooting was the street that was in front of the last apartment I lived in. My pens and pencils are in a Northwinds Apartments coffee cup on Canfield/Caddyfield. The shop he stole from used to be a 7/11 I used to have the high score on their Defender video arcade game. It was a rough neighborhood and about 80% black. Now probably 99% and a lot rougher.

My wife is a social worker who works with people of all backgrounds. People are people. We are all humans. We are nothing more or less. We have the same aspirations for our kids as everyone else. We hope they have the opportunity to get there. We do the best we can. I'd rather work with people than against them in the fight to improve lives and families.
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

So we're different colours and we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you, so what could I have done

I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

And now you're punching and you're kicking and you're shouting at me
I'm relying on your common decency
So far, it hasn't surfaced but I'm sure it exists
It just take a while to travel from your head to your fist

I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
