They can be very creative with incentives. I know of the nephew of a factory owner who came to NYC to study business. He told us about his uncle's idea to rewards good work. Most Americans who heard the idea thought it was nuts. But I realized what they guy was doing. And it was very smart.

This is how it went: If you were an exemplary worker, however it was defined, then your name went into a bucket of the top 5% of your group. Instead of giving more or less set bonuses as is the norm in North America, he would put all the names of the top workers in an urn. During the year end office party, they'd make random draws that was matched to random gifts. The gifts ranged from a BMW to much less pricey ones. If your name came up for that prize, then you got it. It didn't matter if you were a senior VP or a line worker. If you went above and beyond expectation, then you had a chance at a great year end bonus.

I thought that it was quite smart.
