When you respond to a comment and it becomes public, the number of the message you responded to is next to the name of the member you messaged. Click on that number and it takes you back where you left off.

I don't quite follow the question but will take a stab at it.

If you are looking for the previous message in a thread look to the left. You will see "who wrote (nnnn) where nnnn is the number of the previous thread. Click on the link to see the previous message in the thread. To see the replies there is a link to those on the right.

Marking the current message as last read does exactly what it sounds like. Everything below in the list will now be in gray and everything above will be blue for unread. This really works on SI unlike in SA after they started the "Show more replies" shenanigans to conserve bandwidth.

If all you want to do is to go back one screen the browser button works. To go back to the list just click on the subject title.

Hopefully one of those is what you were looking for.
