I don't think I bought anything from J.C. Penney for myself since the late 80's. I can't think of anything I bought from Sears ever.

I was pretty certain J.C. Penney was going to die by the early 00's. Sears sealed their fate when they went into the insurance business in the 90's.

See a pattern? Become a conglomerate. Fail to invest and innovate your core business. Then die.
