I think some of the higher cost is also to keep funding pensions that were not fully funded by buyers of earlier cars. Musk starting with a clean slate has a large advantage there as well. And since it is a tech company, the workers expect 15% discount on stock purchase plans, profit sharing and fair wages based on merit rather than jobs that are hard if not impossible to get fired from.
