OK, I'm guessing that the real bone of contention here is the set of material and legal benefits which accrue to married couples. Me, I think that I wouldn't want to be penalized (no pun, please!!) because I was wired different. I think gay couples should get the same benefits as hetero married couples. Of course, in the balance, I want to see equivalent public records of commitment: equivalents to marriage and divorce. We'll need these to keep property law in order.

What was the legislature's expressed reason for banning gay marriage?
