IBM created the corporate/consumer PC market. Open architecture enabled multiple vendors, driving costs down and generating lots of innovation. In contrast, Apple has always used their proprietary system to drive innovation themselves. As a result, Apple market share has always been small but highly profitable. Microsoft made the real money in the IBM PC universe with a virtual monopoly coupled with sort of modest per unit pricing.
