Ostracism is part of the isolation principal of cults. My current theory as to why this behavior is so prevalent today is the coming collapse of the family farm. The new Deere tractors don't need a farmer, or more accurately the farmer is a drone pilot many miles away running a dozen tractors at the same time. This means fewer or no repair shops and c-stores. It will take time but the path is set. Bill Gates is already the biggest farmer in Iowa.
