It’s not a matter of estimates. I’ve seen from time to time the data as to how many doctors are employed, and how many are independent. And yes, they were forced to abandon private practice and seek employment. It was done through overregulation - and making it very expensive to practice. A study - must be about 20 years ago - showed that the cost of settling “all in” of an average medical claim was $58. Around that time, for an average medical visit Medicare approved around $60-62.

A have a good friend who had a huge Family Practice. He worked 7 days a week, with no vacations in years. When he left his practice (for health reasons) and joined my Hospitalist group, his net income became significantly higher, and he had more time to spend fishing and hunting than he had in decades.

That’s how the cookie crumbled.
