Took years to develop the police apparatus for a police state.

Took years to change the attitude from "fellow citizen" to "probable criminal'.

Police states don't just appear out of the desert.

Aside from the drug issue and the constitutionality of telling someone what they can and cannot put in their body.

Just the practical building of the apparatus.

War on terror gave it a big boost too.

Something like that. Some social anthropologist will sort it out some day.

And aside from all of that (again), I have a vague, uneasy feeling that something isn't quite right, that the country is not the same place I was born into, that somehow the social contract has been violated.

The drug war is as good as any dead horse to ride in on and beat. It's certainly a big part of how we got here.

IMO

It's actually quite involved, how the incentives in policing changed, many, many other things.
