Oh Penni, of course their not right about us. Just think of all the success Pavorati and the opera shows have on Public Television during money collection week.

At least not all of us. I didn't see it but I can imagine it was pretty disappointing.

One time I was so incensed that CBS cancelled a pre-advertised skins game that I got on the phone and called 1800-555-1212 and found a number which connected me to a number which connected me to a number which connected me to a number. And I actually got the program director on the phone to complain.

He was quite surprised to receive a call from a customer. The excuse he gave was pretty lame too. But I got a certain amount of satisfaction :-)

It was so funny the way he kept asking, how did you get this number?

Michael

Only PBS and Hallmark Hall of Fame programs have any sensitivity for art. Of course a football game would never be interrupted in the middle of the game, but art...that is sissy stuff. Americans are big tough boors.

It isn't just the opening ceremony. It's the whole thing. I thought I'd go mad trying to watch the last summer Olympics. You'd think at least they'd let us see a little SPORT. But no, instead we got smarmy "profiles" of athetes, and we were NEVER denied a shot of someone crying, especially if it happened to be a guy. AND we got to see these same irrelevant moments AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. Never mind that there were other competitions going on at the time.

And of course it was made clear that the only entrants of any importance--with a very few exceptions--were the Americans. I remember past Olympics: it was interesting to see weird sports, interesting to hear the national anthems of other countries. Well, I suppose the TV powers-that-be have decided that's not what the Olympics are about. No. They're about schmaltz and jingoism and selling athletic shoes.

Yeah, Penni, speaking of skiing, <<It is much easier to slide downward than to climb to the heavens.>> I'd have to agree. I prefer the high speed quads myself...

Oh, okay just kidding. I think you are right the problem is CBS's commercial focus. But so is the Olympics' focus. Its now one big commercial circus. Idealism has long since been sold to the highest bidder.

I don't understand why CBS missed the opportunity to load up the Snoopy - MetLife blimp with cowcrap and hydrogen, garner a crew of kamikaze mutant ninja turtles and Warner Brothers toonies, and plunge into the arena to the accompanying thunder of the Ninth being drowned out by Wagner.

Penni, I think it had great political import, and you are right on the mark. I hope you send this post to CBS...we all should write to them. After reading your post, I keep thinking of my favourite scene in the Shawshank Redemption, where prisoners look upwards in wonder at the beautiful music wafting from the speakers.

I am sad, because while I watched it I thought how much you must be enjoying it and was looking forward to your commentary. (To it's credit, the CBC did show the entire thing.) I agree with you, the ceremony was beautiful and the idea was inspired; a rare uplifting moment after hours of seamy stories and talk of war streaming from the tube.

Penni -- Had to respond:

<<Motown musical garbage assault>> Unfair to compare Motown (which some of us enjoy immensely) to Beethoven's greatest (and IMO music's most impressive) work. Different arts with different motives; don't have to down one to lift the other.

<<I thought this was insulting to the Olympics, to Japan and to us.>>

So, what's new about taht?

<<Perhaps we have lost the ability for spiritual elevation?>>

Perhaps some of us never had such a capability? Seems to me that many people don't have the ability to appreciate the finer things that culture has to offer, and that "finer" has vastly different connotations, depending on the circumstances of one's existence?

Maybe there are reasons for "elitism" to exist...

BTW, can you imagine how many people in the US and around the world feel exactly as you do? Bet CBS is feeling awfully sheepish about the situation. Bet they have a web page or two, too.
