I am thinking much shorter term than the demographics will come to play. I just want to feel comfortable that the Chinese economy and the relationships with the US won't get worse before I buy in. I am not looking for improvements - just stability.

That town you were trying to think of is Xiamen, which is a really nice city by the sea. Tons of Taiwanese people have real estate there and in other places in Fujian due to the proximity to Taiwan.
