There are now swarms leaving California which for centuries was the promised land of freedom and opportunity. Not so much now. England once led the world with VVV before the British Disease, socialism and welfare, but they were superseded 100 years ago - WWI didn't help. Nor WWII. But abandonment of the virtuous values was the main problem. For all their faults, the Anglosphere remains the main place to get to. But Russia is now a place for asylum seekers rather than USA, which is heavily into political persecution and increasingly so. Same for UK - don't mention the Moslems. With 200 nations to choose from, there is quite a range. Within those nations, there are states and other niches in which to seek improved lives. And multitudes of towns and cities and remote locations within each state. With mobility cheap and fast! In 24 hours I could be anywhere on Earth [near enough, covid restrictions currently a problem]. 150 years ago it was a permanent, expensive, months/year long project to get from one side of the world to the other. With a ticker symbol for each country's Tradable Citizenship, voting would have real meaning, right there on the ticker as soon as people voted. Voting to cut your value would be less popular. At present people don't consider national value, just personal gain and to hell with the commonwealth which they don't own - the bosses do. So people vote to take take take with no reason to stop, all the way to the bottom. It's uncertain that China's system is worse than the taketaketake democratic process of individuals looting the collective and enslaving the productive. For example, Greece[ *note 1]could go from a third world country [near enough these days] to the most glorious harbinger of freedom, prosperity and success by the simple adoption of Tradable Citizenship. A million new citizens paying $2 million each wouldn't over cr owd the place and would provide $2 trillion, real money in any language, and would provide a vast economic boost. And those new citizens would not lose their investment, they would gain from it as their $2 million would turn to $4 million and $8 million, depending on competition from other states who figure out it's a good idea. Start with 10,000 new citizenships per year sold at auction to get the market price. Then increase or reduce the number depending on what's optimum. Taxes could be cut to zero on most things as the revenue would fund government needs for borders, policing, contract enforcement, punishment. Crime would be profitable = confiscate part or all of criminal citizenship and sell at auction the body parts of murderers. Crime Pays [a great new slogan for a Tradable Citizenship country]. I would be keen to buy a Greece tradable citizenship, just for the security, location and climate, but if they also became a great country like the good old days, that too. Aotearoa-Zimbabwe could do it too. Maybe I should make it happen here. The weather would be great here in January and Greece in July. Owning 2 or 3 countries would be very nice. Mqurice * note 1 = I discussed it with Dmitri on Folegandros a few years ago. He owned the hotel I was staying at. He liked the idea and was keen for me to meet his engineer son but I left before he arrived.
